Maths Investigations – in class or at home/homework

Water usage – in a sink in the bathroom/classroom, including investigating wastage when a tap leaks at different rates. Water usage at home eg timing showers, filling bath with a jug to see how much it holds.

Sport – how many of various activities they can do in a minute (could find average across a class), how long it takes to do an activity, how far they can jump on one foot or two, and summarising and graphing results.

Measuring volume of irregular objects (where you can’t use lxbxh) eg by displacement or estimate etc.

Studying Tuckshop – finding average prices (for drinks, sandwiches, hot foods, snacks, ice treats), what you could buy for a particular amount, collecting, analysing and graphing their sales for a week etc.

Cups – a regular cup is 250mls: use a measuring jug and record the capacity of all the different cups (at home or school)

Windows - which is the biggest window in your house? Guess first, then write down how you will work it out. Work it out and then see if you were right. (number/length/area)

Reading - How fast do you read? When you are reading tonight, write down how many pages you read in 20 minutes. Then work out how many pages that would be per hour. Then, without counting all the words you read, work out approximately how many words you read per minute. (time/number)
